Painting Over the Misery in Haiti

The camps at Canaan are clear evidence that the government of Haiti and the international community have not done enough, with regards to the housing problems of millions of displaced Haitians. Instead of taking action the political community in Haiti has "painted over the misery" of Haitian existence, to quote Freidy, one of the tourguides that led us through Canaan. Government officials have covered up the realities of the Haitian poor, through poorly attained misrepresentative statistics, and by forcing groups to relocate into poorly constructed, isolated, and unsanitary slums. Through their actions the government has shown an inability to tackle the root causes of misery and poverty in their country. Local non-profit organizations in Haiti, like Fonkoze, have proven to be more effective in tackling root problems within Haiti as opposed to just covering them up.
